Berniece Hunt: The Family Health Crisis That Led Her Out of Retirement and Into Teaching Brain Health
When we make a change in our lives, although it’s bound to shake things up, we’re typically able to usher it in and take the time needed to get used to our new state of life. But when a loved one is faced with a sudden health crisis, there is no time to prepare for the ground to shift beneath us. We’re forced to face, head-on, the reality of our own mortality and more seriously honor the fragility of life. This week on Journeys Through Change (formerly known as Go Go Bistro), my guest Karen Hager and I are talking about the family health crisis that led her out of retirement and into teaching brain health!
After Berniece’s husband contracted sepsis that went into his brain, she experienced a short-term glimpse of life with someone whose brain was “broken”. This incident halted her 12-year, post-retirement “gig” as a part-time wellness coach and turned her focus solely to brain health. With the pandemic limiting her options, she plunged into the world of online coaching. With the support of her biggest cheerleaders, her grandchildren, she received her certification as a brain health professional and launched her online business, Keep Your Brain Sharp at almost 70 years old.
In this episode, Berniece and I discuss:
- How Berniece’s husband's struggle with sepsis became the impetus for her furthering her education in brain health.
- Adapting from teaching students in person to launching a business in the online space.
- Berniece’s acronym for the 5 keys to brain health.
- Simple tips you can implement into your everyday life to improve and optimize your brain health.
- Practicing “neurobics” to keep your brain engaged even in your daily routines.
